Remove all the Furniture
Remove every piece of furniture from the room. Everything must be moved out of the way before the carpet can be hauled up.
STEP 1
Raise the Carpet
Remove the carpet and the flooring to reveal the source of the squeak
A squeaking noise is usually caused by friction between two boards. This is readily remedied by making a kerf (or gap). Use a circular saw to cut the space between the plywood pieces. Only cut to the plywood's depth.
STEP 2
Placement of Secure Boards
Once you've made the space, the boards will be able to move independently of one another; secure them in place appropriately. The nail should go in at an angle and you should be right over the floor joist. Toenailing is the term for this. The plywood might ride up and down the nail if you go in straight.
STEP 3
Re-Nail Boards
Remove the current nails first if there is an inadequately nailed down nail. Re-nail the boards using the same toenailing technique.
STEP 4
Replace the Subfloor
The subfloor may be replaced once all of the boards have been firmly fastened. Seal the gap between the subfloor and the joists with adhesive. Replace the plywood and apply wood glue to the tops of the joists in a serpentine motion.
STEP 5
Replace the Carpet
Replace the carpet once all squeaks and creaks have been eliminated.
